Frequently Asked Questions

Everything You Need to Know About Remote Interpreting Services

Remote interpreting is a form of interpreting in which the interpreter participates in a meeting via an audio or video connection without being physically present. Spoken content is conveyed into the target language either consecutively or simultaneously, provided that suitable technical infrastructure is available. The most appropriate interpreting method is determined based on the purpose of the meeting, language pair, number of participants and platform. Telephone calls and hybrid meetings can also be accommodated depending on the requirements.

We can assess interpreting requirements for Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, Cisco Webex and organisation-specific meeting platforms. Telephone and WhatsApp calls can also be arranged separately. As interpreting features vary between platforms, the availability of simultaneous interpreting channels, account permissions and compatibility with the meeting format are checked in advance. The platform to be used and the scope of technical support are clarified during the quotation process.

Yes. In consecutive interpreting, the speaker pauses after meaningful segments to allow the interpreter to convey the message. In Remote Simultaneous Interpreting (RSI), the interpretation is delivered almost simultaneously with the speaker’s speech, requiring suitable audio transmission and language channels. The most appropriate interpreting method, interpreter team and technical setup are determined based on the meeting format, language directions, programme and platform capabilities.

Depending on the meeting requirements, audio quality, microphones, headsets, internet connections and platform access are checked. For simultaneous interpreting sessions, language channels and interpreter functions are also tested. The timing of the technical test and the scope of technical support are agreed upon in advance. Participants are advised to join from a quiet environment using suitable equipment and a reliable internet connection.

Meeting content and preparation materials are handled solely for the purposes of providing the service and within the scope of the relevant authorisations. Meeting invitation links, access permissions, file-sharing arrangements and data retention conditions are clarified in advance. Any specific confidentiality requirements or requests for a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) should be communicated before the assignment. Arrangements for audio or video recording, access to recordings and the sharing of recorded materials are agreed upon separately.

The interpreter is selected based on the language pair, subject of the meeting, subject-matter expertise, interpreting method and relevant professional experience. The date, time zone, session duration and remote working requirements are also taken into account. Agendas, presentations and terminology files may be shared in advance to facilitate preparation. Interpreter availability and assignment details are finalised once the quotation and meeting schedule have been confirmed

Yes. Over-the-phone interpreting (OPI) can be arranged through a suitable audio connection that allows all parties and the interpreter to participate in the same call. The subject of the conversation, language pair, scheduled time, estimated duration and connection method are shared in advance. Clear turn-taking and good audio quality are essential. Where visual information or document review is required, a video connection or an alternative interpreting method may be considered.

The number of interpreters required depends on the language directions, interpreting method, session duration, break schedule and number of parallel meetings. One interpreter may be sufficient for short consecutive interpreting sessions involving a single language pair, while a team working in rotation is arranged for long simultaneous interpreting sessions. Additional interpreters may be required for multilingual events or sessions taking place simultaneously in different rooms. The final number is specified in the written quotation after the programme has been reviewed.

We recommend submitting your request as soon as the date and programme have been confirmed. Assignments involving less commonly requested languages, specialised subject matter, long sessions or multilingual events may require additional time for interpreter selection and technical preparation. Urgent requests are assessed subject to availability. The assignment, working hours and terms for changes are finalised through written confirmation.

The cost is determined based on the language pair, interpreting method, subject area, number of interpreters and total working hours. The number of participants, platform or licensing requirements, technical support, preparation and urgency may also affect the scope and cost of the service. The service duration, any additional working hours and terms for changes are specified in the written quotation. A tailored quotation is prepared once the meeting details have been provided.
