What You Need to Know About Simultaneous Interpreting and Equipment Services
Simultaneous interpreting is the process of conveying a speaker’s message into the target language with only a very short delay while the speaker continues talking. The interpreter listens, processes the meaning and delivers the interpretation almost simultaneously. Listeners follow the appropriate language channel through headsets. Depending on the nature of the event, a booth-based, portable or remote interpreting system may be arranged.
Simultaneous interpreting can be used at conferences, congresses, seminars, corporate meetings, product launches and press conferences. Multilingual online or hybrid events may also be accommodated. The participants’ language requirements, session schedule and venue conditions are assessed together to determine the most suitable interpreting team and technical solution.
The number of interpreters depends on the language directions, session duration, workload and number of rooms operating simultaneously. For long sessions, a team of interpreters working in rotation is arranged. In most conference settings, two interpreters are assigned to each language booth. The final team structure is specified in the written quotation after the event programme has been reviewed.
A soundproof interpreting booth is generally preferred for conferences held in indoor venues. However, not every event requires the same solution. Portable interpreting systems may be used for mobile groups, while remote interpreting may be suitable for certain meetings. Whispered interpreting may also be considered for a small number of listeners. The most appropriate method is selected based on acoustic conditions, visibility and participant requirements.
The required quantity is determined based on the number of participants who will listen to the interpreting channels and their language distribution, rather than the total number of attendees. Meeting rooms, sessions, guest speakers, and equipment distribution and return arrangements are also taken into account. Spare equipment requirements and the channel allocation plan are finalised with the technical team, and the quantities are specified in the quotation and event plan.
In consecutive interpreting, the speaker pauses after meaningful segments to allow the interpreter to convey the message. In simultaneous interpreting, the interpretation is delivered almost simultaneously with the speaker’s speech, so separate pauses are not required. Simultaneous interpreting also requires a planned audio transmission and listening system. The most suitable method is selected based on the event programme, number of languages and meeting format.
Yes. We assess whether the platform supports interpreting channels, as well as its audio infrastructure and connection requirements. For hybrid events, audio transmission between on-site and remote participants is planned together. Platform access, language channels and technical responsibilities are tested in advance. The appropriate system and scope of technical support are specified in the quotation.
Depending on the event requirements, the venue, interpreting booth placement, audio connections and internet infrastructure are assessed. After equipment setup, microphones, interpreter consoles, language channels, receivers and headsets are tested. The schedule for the site inspection and sound check, together with the scope of technical support during the event, is specified in the event plan.
The cost is determined based on the language pair, number of interpreters, event duration and working hours. The number of interpreting booths, receivers and headsets, as well as the number of rooms and language channels, location, travel and technical requirements, may also affect the total cost. A written quotation is provided, detailing the scope of interpreting services, equipment, setup and technical support.
