Everything You Need to Know About Marriage Document Translation and Wedding Ceremony Interpreting
Interpreting support is required to ensure that a party who does not understand Turkish can comprehend the official explanations and declarations of intent. The stages at which the interpreter must be present and the documents they must provide should be confirmed with the relevant marriage registration office. Nationality, language proficiency and application requirements are assessed together, and interpreting arrangements are planned according to the application and ceremony dates.
The marriage registration office may require a sworn interpreter and a sworn interpreter’s oath record. Muratpaşa Municipality explicitly requires foreign nationals who do not understand Turkish to be accompanied by a sworn interpreter during both the application and marriage ceremony stages and to submit the interpreter’s oath record. The current qualification and documentation requirements of the relevant office are confirmed before the interpreter is assigned.
Depending on the application, passports, identity documents, birth certificates or birth registration extracts, and certificates of no impediment to marriage or single status certificates may require translation. Divorce decrees or death certificates relating to previous marriages, as well as residence documents, may also be required. The final list of required documents is determined by the relevant marriage registration office based on nationality, the country of issuance and the circumstances of the application. The consistency of names, dates and document details is also checked.
A party who does not understand Turkish may also be required to have an interpreter present during the application process. For example, Muratpaşa Municipality specifies this requirement for both the application and the marriage ceremony. As the application appointment and marriage ceremony may take place at different times, interpreting requirements for both stages are clarified and arrangements are made in advance.
The interpreter conveys the marriage registrar’s explanations and questions into the relevant language and the parties’ responses into Turkish. The interpreter facilitates communication to ensure that declarations are understood and assists during the signing process. The interpreter follows the official order of the ceremony and the registrar’s instructions. The scope of the assignment, language requirements and meeting arrangements are agreed upon in advance, and the interpreter attends the ceremony at the agreed time.
The documents required from the interpreter, particularly identification and the record of the interpreter’s oath, are confirmed with the relevant marriage registration office. Before the assignment, the document language, interpreter details and acceptance requirements for the documents to be submitted are clarified. This ensures that the necessary preparations are completed for both the application and the marriage ceremony.
Requirements vary depending on the document type, the country of issuance and the country where it will be used, applicable international conventions and the requirements of the receiving authority. Foreign official documents may require an apostille or another form of legalisation, while translations may require notarisation. The order of authentication procedures for the document and its translation should be confirmed with the relevant marriage registration office and competent authority before proceeding.
Form B is a multilingual marriage registration extract. In Türkiye, it can also be obtained through the e-Government service of the General Directorate of Population and Citizenship Affairs. Its multilingual format does not necessarily mean that it will be accepted under the same conditions in every country. Any requirements for translation or additional legalisation should be confirmed with the receiving institution and the relevant authority in the country where the document will be used.
We recommend submitting your interpreter request as soon as the date and venue of the marriage ceremony have been confirmed. The language pair, date, time, travel arrangements, application support and document translation requirements are assessed together. Early planning is particularly important for busy periods and less commonly requested languages. The interpreter assignment, scope of services and any terms for changes are finalised through written confirmation.
The cost is determined based on the language pair, type of service, document volume, date and time of the marriage ceremony, assignment duration, location, travel and waiting time. Application support, document translation, urgency and notarial procedures may also affect the scope and cost of the service. Translation and interpreting fees, together with any notarial fees and official charges, are itemised separately in the written quotation.
